The following information is meant to help you to start thinking about smart kitchen design but is not meant to be a replacement for a qualified, professional kitchen designer. An experienced kitchen designer will not only help you with a smart design but will help you to avoid expensive and unsightly mistakes. Keep in mind that most designers have never been trained and don’t know much about their craft. You will want to do your own due diligence and find a designer that has a good understanding of space planning, construction code and smart design.
Smart Kitchen Design
HAVE A PLAN BEFORE YOU START
Smart kitchen design starts with a well-designed kitchen layout. Don’t make the mistake of tearing out walls and making major structural changes, like moving a window or wall, before you’ve sought the advice of a well trained kitchen designer! Misguided homeowners can end up spending more time and money fixing their mistakes.
FORM AND BALANCE
All too often we see appliances in the wrong location within the kitchen. Appliance location should be well thought out so that they function and open properly. They should be placed no more than nine feet from the sink and should not require you to walk around an island to access them. Of course, there are many more thoughts to consider, e.g., how you use the space, including adjacent spaces. For the best outcome, we highly recommend talking with a professional kitchen designer that has several years of experience.

ORGANIZATION
There’s no sense in spending the money it takes to do a kitchen remodel, to not consider how to organize your kitchen. We suggest preplanning what will be stored in each cabinet and then working with your designer to best set that cabinet up for organization. There are many options out there from slide out organizers to waste storage. There is a solution for almost every need.
PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION
Proper and professional kitchen installation makes for a wonderful outcome. Conversely, you can have the best kitchen design along with a great quality cabinet, but if you don’t get the installation right it can lower the value of the home. Unless your installer installs cabinets every day, you are probably going to get a less than desirable outcome. Look for trim carpenters or cabinet installers and stay away from the neighborhood handyman or general carpenter. Sure, they may know how to do it, but he execution and overall outcome will not be the same as having a professional cabinet installer. One last note, this is not the area to try to save money on a kitchen project. If anything, go with a little more affordable cabinet and spend the money for a professional cabinet installer.
